Why does fireclay break down over time?
Due to the large proportion of mineral substances, fireclay also has a small disadvantage: it is relatively brittle.
Due to continuous high heat exposure, it eventually develops cracks.
These are the first signs of material stress, but not yet a reason for replacement.
The replacement of fireclay should only be carried out when parts of the material fall out and the protection of the stove can no longer be guaranteed.
During fireplace maintenance, the fireclay should therefore always be checked.

Two questions keep coming up in this context:
Is a broken fireclay brick after prolonged firing a warranty case? No.
The firebox lining is treated as a wear part.
Does the stove manufacturer, the chimney sweep, or the dealer have to replace the fireclay?
Here, too, a clear no:
The operator of the stove is responsible for the firebox lining themselves. Of course, you could hire a professional for this – but if you have manual skills, you can also do the replacement yourself. Another piece of good news: The replacement material is much cheaper than you might think.
What exactly is fireclay?
The term "fireclay" (also "chamotte") is often used synonymously for refractory bricks.
When the professional speaks of fireclay, they mean a natural product, a refractory material.
It is highly heat-resistant and has excellent heat storage properties, ideal for fireplace and stove construction.
