Under unfavorable combustion conditions, such as incorrect burner settings or the burning of excessively moist solid fuels, especially wood, oily, tarry, and even graphite-like deposits can form. These coatings are difficult to remove mechanically. Similarly resistant deposits also form in smokehouses as so-called smoke tar, consisting of grease vapors and thermal decomposition products.
